Day 1 Wrap Up

High gusts, squalls and potential thunderstorms kept the Jr Gold Cup sailors off the water until 11 am after which it became a perfect sailing day in the Great Sound. Sailed in 16-18 knots from the SSW it proved to be a great day of racing. Off to an early lead is Ingnacio "Nacho" Rogala firing off a 1,2,,1 followed by Bermudians Owen Siese and Kalin Hillier. Dominican Paloma Esteban is in 4th place and is the leading female in the group of 35 sailors.

19 Local sailors and 16 Visiting sailors have officially entered the 2009 Ren Re Jr. Gold Cup. After registration and before dinner, the Jr Gold Cup skippers spent some time with two of the best sailors in the world. Peter Gilmour (AUS) and Adam Minoprio (NZL) chatted with the kids and gave them pointers to becoming successful adult sailors.

Peter Gilmour is one of the most respected and feared competitors on the World Match Racing Tour. He is a four-time World Champion of Match Race Sailing (1990, '97, '98, 06). He is also one of the most experienced and knowledgeable skippers on the match racing circuit today. He has participated in five America's Cup challenges winning with the Alinghi syndicate in 2007. He currently represents the Yanmar Racing Team and most recently won the Monsoon Cup in 2008. Peter has competed in several Gold Cup regattas and will be aiming to give the younger skippers a run for their money in the 2009 event. ISAF RANKING: 11

Adam Minoprio, joined the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadrons Youth Training Academy in 2002 and has been rising up the ranks quickly ever since. Adam, now aged 23, along with his team "Black Match Racing" won the Marseille International Match Race this year and came 2nd in the Portugal Match Cup. In 2008 the team were successful in the Toyota Sopot Match Cup, Blurimini Match Race Italy and the Open Match Race Austria. They also placed 2nd in the Monsoon Cup and the Bermuda Gold Cup. Other achievements include winning the 2007 Hardy Cup and the 2006 and 2007 Asian Match Race Championships. Adam was 4th in the 2008 World Match Racing Tour. This will be Adam's second time competing in the Bermuda Gold Cup following his spectacular Gold Cup debut in 2008 when he faced Johnie Berntsson in the final. His main goal for this year is to win the World Match Race Tour. ISAF RANKING: 1

Off to see and sail a Byte CII.

Most of the competitors arrived yesterday with minimal issues except for the Danish boys missing their connection. Meanwhile everyone rigged and received their charter boats and had a pre lunch practice. They will have another sail in the Optis this afternoon but before that they will have a chance to try out the Byte CII, the chosen boat for the first Youth Olympic Games next August.

Marina da Gloria is the venue for the 2016 Olympics!

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has elected Rio de Janeiro in Brazil as the host city of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in 2016 during its 121st Session in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Rio de Janeiro received 66 votes compared to Madrid’s 32 in the final round of voting.

Marina da Gloria in Guanabara Bay is the proposed venue for the 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition. The Bay is already well known as a world-class sailing venue: earlier this year it was a stopover venue for the Volvo Ocean Race; whilst in 2007 in was the sailing venue for the Pan American Games. Next year the Star class visits Rio for their World Championship battle. Brazil has a proud record in Olympic sailing, in fact sailing is one of the nation's most successful Olympic sports. Torben Grael is the only sailor to have won five Olympic medals, whilst Robert Scheidt is only one behind with two golds and two silvers. At Beijing 2008 Fernanda Oliveira and Isabel Swanbecame the first female Brazilian sailors to win an Olympic medal. Brazil also showed its dedication to the future of the sport as it hosted this year's Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship with great success.

Rio Chosen as the host City for the 2016 Olympic Games. Will Niteroi be the sailing venue?

Reporting from Washington - Rio de Janeiro has won the right to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, a decision that will set the games in South America for the first time."In every competition, there can only be one winner," said Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee.Today's announcement dashes the hopes of U.S. boosters -- President Obama chief among them -- who had put their reputations on the line to help win the games for Chicago.Word came from the IOC as the president and the first lady headed back to Washington, hours after making a last-minute appeal in Copenhagen for their hometown.Their rival in the campaign, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, asked the Olympic panel to choose a country that has never gotten to host the Games."The opportunity now is to expand the Games to new continents," Lula told the panel in his presentation. "Light the caldron in a tropical country, in the most beautiful of cities. Send a powerful message to the world that the Olympic Games belong to all people, all continents, and to all humanity."Chicago's elimination was one of the more shocking defeats in IOC voting history. The city had long been viewed as a front-runner.But the emotional appeals from Obama and his wife, Michelle fell on deaf ears in the European-dominated IOC.The IOC's last two experiences in the United States were marred by controversy: The 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics were sullied by a bribery scandal and logistical problems, and a bombing marred the 1996 Games in Atlanta.U.S. officials in Copenhagen did not immediately comment, and the word was greeted with stunned confusion and disappointment in Chicago, where thousands had gathered in Daley Plaza to hear the news.In the final days of the campaign, Chicago's bid appeared to be gathering both momentum and clout. As it made its way to Copenhagen, the city's delegation picked up travelers from the U.S. Senate and the Obama Cabinet. When Obama himself decided to go, it seemed like the wind was behind the U.S. bid. No one has better vote-counters than the president, and political wisdom held that he wouldn't stick his neck out if there weren't a very good chance of a win.In the wake of the announcement today, though, his top aides were at a loss for answers."I'm sure there will be quite a bit of postmortems done on this," said David Axelrod, the president's senior political advisor, appearing on CNN, calling himself too "engrossed" in fathoming the politics of Washington to get involved in the politics in Copenhagen.
